Where should you start when you write a blog? This blog is about ‘breaking the distance’ in a long distance relationship. So for you to get to know us better I would like to write about how we met, from my perspective.
At the end of January 2019, I left Amsterdam to go to Bali for a few weeks. My first week would start in Canggu at Pelan Pelan, a surf and yoga resort. I had just come out of a relationship so I was looking forward to going on a single trip. Sitting in the plane, I thought to myself: ‘this is going to be my journey, my travel, I will only do the things I like and … Don’t fall in love!’ I felt strong and independent.
When I arrived at Pelan Pelan I felt a bit lost, alone and jet lagged. That first evening I met an English girl called Tash, she was very talkative when we met and that made me happy.
The day after I went surfing, which was nice and a distraction, but I still had the restless Holland vibe and wanted to go into town. Tash had been before, so we went by scooter with her leading the way.
This was the first time I had seen her in daylight and I noticed how beautiful she was. She had a dark skin and the most beautiful smile I had ever seen. From then on she was on my radar. She also had a vibe that made me think she may be gay. A beautiful girl but also cool, tough, and very athletic.
The day after we had lunch with you whole group at Pelan Pelan. She was talking about her ex-girlfriend and I smoothly mentioned I also had an ex-girlfriend. Later that day we went into town together and actually from that day we were inseparable. I fell in love so fast, without even knowing it was happening, I only saw her and I just wanted to be close to her.
From then on we did everything together. I didn’t know if she liked me in that way. We were always physically close, sitting next to each other, touching legs. I was always very aware if our body’s were touching. At night I would dream about her. I texted my friends to tell them I was in love. Nothing had happened yet, she had just come out of a relationship.
One evening we went out drinking, there was so much energy going on, sitting close to each other. I was so ready for that first kiss, but our first kiss happened on another night. After some
The days after that were complicated, no one at the resort knew and she wanted to keep it that way. I was a bit annoyed by that fact, she just turned single and she was pulling towards me and then pushing me away again, I couldn’t catch her. One night we went out with the girls and she said she didn’t want me to have any expectations, as we were in Bali. I said I didn’t want anything serious either, but secretly I was hurting. After a few nights of uncertainty, her giving mixed signals, I was done with it. I emotionally shut down and was preparing myself to travel alone again. I didn’t want her to break my heart and I was trying to protect myself. Above all I didn’t want to play games anymore, I had done that for too long already.
As I started to distance myself, she noticed I was slipping away. All of a sudden she reached for my me and when she made that effort, my heart jumped and she caught it.
The days that followed were a build up to the relationship we have now. We spent every day together for 3.5 weeks. We went on a day trip to Ubud and spent our last 5 days on the beautiful honeymoon island, Nusa Penida. Every day we grew closer to each other.
She can be emotionally quite closed and every day I peeled an invisible layer away. They say true beauty lays within and she has both. I don’t want to write a gushy blog, but it’s hard not to when you are so in love.
In Bali I lived day by day, not thinking about the future. I enjoyed every single moment with her. We were in paradise, she was my paradise and I was her ocean. We didn’t talk about Europe and being back home. Although we declared our love to each other, and yes it happened on Valentine’s day, our last day together. We didn’t make plans for the future, we were together and that was all that mattered. On our way to the airport she asked me when I would have a free weekend, then told me she had just booked a flight for me to come to London. I was so surprised and happy, knowing our goodbye would just be for a short while. I kissed her goodbye knowing we will meet again and knowing with all my heart I will never let her go.
She is the love of my life and one day we will ‘Break the Distance’.
