I (Marthe) was a virgin vegan, but now I have been vegan for over a year. Before I met Tash I still had the idea that being vegan was just eating carrots and salad, that vegan people were floaty spiritual and way too healthy/skinny. How could I be more wrong?
Tash showed me the world of magical vegan food and I was so surprised. Being vegan in Bali was actually quite easy, but I told Tash that it wasn’t so common in Amsterdam. Yet again, how could I be more wrong? Tash will love this part, because she loves to be right, lol.
When I arrived back in Amsterdam in February 2019 I saw vegan stuff everywhere! It’s like buying a new car and all of a sudden you see that car everywhere. Domino’s was advertising vegan pizza’s, Oatly billboards were and still are all over Amsterdam. “Are we the post milk generation?”
My brother doesn’t like to think so. But the more I see, the more I am convinced that it is time for a change. Many people are eating less meat and are becoming more aware. Many restaurants now offer vegan options too, but I think it should be even more!
So where can you eat vegan in Amsterdam? I can finally say I feel an expert when it comes to vegan places in Amsterdam. Go to the app Soulpicks and see which places we recommend as vegans in Amsterdam & London.
Who said that eating vegan is healthy? This totally proves it otherwise and this is definitely my favourite place! The one thing I really miss is eating chicken. I love it, in my salad, in a curry, you name it! If you LOVE chicken, then you should try the Daddy MC
Mr. & Mrs. Watson is a 100 % vegan restaurant in Amsterdam East. The scenery is lovely and if you want to go for a fancy dinner, this is the place. The people who work there are great and they even have cheeses. I have to say that the dishes differ in taste, some are quite plain, others are very tasty. The deserts have been my favourite so far.
This is my favourite lunch place in Amsterdam East. Tash and I love to go there for the perfect lunch. It’s a small and cute cafe, where you have option to eat in or takeaway. They only serve vegetarian and vegan dishes, the vegan croissants are the best!
This is a coffee bar that has 2 locations in Amsterdam. I’ve been to the one in the city centre, it’s small and very cute. I’ve been there for a coffee with a friend, but you can also bring your laptop and do some work. Two Dutch girls own this place, they find sustainability and fair trade very important. That’s why all their products are organic, vegetarian and vegan. I have to say the coffee is delicious!
This is a very good salad bar, this may sound a little boring, but the salads are amazing! They are big, super tasty and organic. My favourite after a workout is the Green Protein. They have three different locations in Amsterdam.
Not really a vegan place but I would like to mention it. It’s a cute coffee and lunch cafe with different locations throughout Holland. You can order your drink/food with oat milk or soya milk, so you can make it vegan yourself. Their bagels are great and you can make them vegan too.
H/eart.h is an amazing restaurant in De Pijp, in the middle of the Dutch Market de Albert Cuypstraat. We have eaten here several times and the owner is an absolute legend! They also have a little shop in the restaurant and hanging chairs which make you feel like you are eating in the jungle with all the plants surrounding you. You absolutely have to try the vegan sushi, it’s too good to be true. Update September 2020: they are currently closed and working on a new location.
This place has the BEST Vegan Roti ever! You have to go here if you love Surinamese and Ethiopian. They also have many other amazing dishes. But if you’re feel a little naughty, then order the nachos, O M G so good! This lovely restaurant is also in De Pijp on Van Woustraat.
De Waaghals is a vegetarian restaurant on the Frans Halsstraat. However, they have several vegan options. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. I have eaten a really good curry here. All the ingredients they use are local and bio.
I know there are a lot more places to discover, let me know if you have any recommendations and I will update this blog. This also means I should go out and eat more vegan food when we are in Amsterdam… what a great excuse 😉

Originally from Amsterdam, I am now living in London with Tash, after we finally ‘Broke the Distance’. I love travelling and want to visit as many places as possible.
