Today it’s time for our first travel blog. There are so many great places in the world to visit, but what place do you know better then your hometown? I (Marthe) have lived in Amsterdam East (Amsterdam Oost) for eight years and this is where I feel most at home. Amsterdam East is different to the rest of Amsterdam, it has less tourists, isn’t as busy, but is still vibrant with lots of things to do.
Amsterdam East is known for being multi-cultural and during the past few years, the area has had a massive upgrade. It now consists of a mixture of families, young people, expats and students living there. It’s close to the city centre, just a 15 min bike ride away. I like to stay in

My favourite place to go for drinks and food. It offers good vegan options and it’s always busy. On Monday they have a fun quiz night.
Location: 1ste v. Swindenstraat
This one is also mentioned in my ‘Vegan Food Amsterdam’ blog, but I have to recommend it again. It’s low key and they serve amazing beers and cocktails.
Location: Linnaeusstraat 2,
This is my absolute favourite museum in Amsterdam, and it’s just next door. The tropical museum has a permanent collection of cultural arts from around the world. They have divided the museum into sections, ranging from the Middle East to Africa. They also have awesome guest exhibitions from time to time. The building is also beautiful, I highly recommend visiting.
Location: Linnaeusstraat 29
When the weather is nice or even when it’s cold, you can drink good beer outside in the large beer garden. There are long tables so everyone has to get cosy next to one another. In the evening they put on heaters to keep everyone warm whilst drinking ice cold beer.

If you are looking for real life Tinder, then here is where you can find it. On Friday and Saturday night it’s packed with women and men looking for both an innocent flirt or to hook up. The ages range between 25-40 years. The nurses and doctors from the hospital next door (where I work too) come here after their work shifts. It can be very busy because it’s a small bar and very popular. You can also go during the week for lunch or an afternoon drink.
Location: Plantage Kerklaan 38-40
Technically not in

I have to mention this restaurant because it was my favourite place to go before I became vegetarian. They do have vegetarian options, but not many vegan options. It’s an English restaurant, serving fresh food and great drinks. Eating there feels like sitting in your living room, very casual and cozy. The people working there are really friendly too.
Location: Linnaeusstraat 11A
This is a bar and restaurant with a massive outside area. It’s the perfect place to go for drinks on a Friday or Saturday night. I recommend ordering a Brouwerij’tij, it’s
Location: Oosterpark, 1092
This small park had a big upgrade last year. It is much smaller than the more well-known Vondelpark, but big enough to stroll around and includes a pond. You can also find a small swimming pool for kids, which is really nice on hot summer days. The locals often take BQQ’s for a relaxing evening in the park.

If you are a coffee snob, in search of good coffee then Coffee Bru is the place to go. You can either grab your coffee to go or sit-in. I recommend ordering a cake too, they have a great selection.
So that’s my top list of places to go in Amsterdam East. We hope you enjoy exploring them, as much as we do.
Originally from Amsterdam, I am now living in London with Tash, after we finally ‘Broke the Distance’. I love travelling and want to visit as many places as possible.
