Saturday the 27th of July 2019 is the start of the Amsterdam Pride week. I (Marthe) honestly have to say this is my favourite week of the year. The whole city becomes one big rainbow. There are loads of cool events happening, all helping to create a vibrant and happy atmosphere in the city. I’m so gutted that Tash can’t be here, she starts her summer tour this week with her show, performing all over the UK. But next year we will make sure we can go to all the Pride events together.
The theme of this years is: “Remember the past, Create the future”. Exactly 50 years ago the protests at Stonewall began in New York. This marked the official beginning of the LGBT movement in the USA. Amsterdam looks back through 50 years of history as well as looking forward to the future. We have already achieved so much within the LGBT community, but there is still so much work to do.
There are so many ways to get involved during Amsterdam Pride. What to choose? I’m always struggling with this. I wish I was just free all week and could go to all the events. In this blog I want to give you a quick overview of what you can do, specifically for woman.
Saturday the 29th of July. The start of this week will be with the Pride Walk. This walk is all about visibility, showing that we are proud and stand for our LGBT rights. Also representing the countries who don’t have legal rights (yet). It starts at Homomonument (Gay Monument), where many inspirational speeches will be given. The walk continues all the way to Dam Square and to Vondelpark. There’s music, performances and markets along the way. Unfortunately, I can’t go because I’m working.
During the whole week there will be various events and tours in museums, cool locations, cinemas and even the Zoo. There are so many incredible events going on, it’s unreal! I made a selection of the things I would like to do:
– Pink Tour. Atria’s library stores one of the biggest collections on woman, gender and diversity. They developed a tour about the changing position of the LBTI women in Holland since 1960. I will definitely be joining this one!
– Documentary FCHyena x IDFA. This is a documentary about England! It’s how the LGBT community developed itself throughout the years. As I have a
– Photo exposition Body in Love. These pictures are all about the body. The photographer used various pictures from different Pride f
– The Rijksmuseum will give a tour through the museum all about gay history. I’m so curious about this, I will join on Monday. Let us know if you will be there (@_breakingthedistance)
– Artis the Zoo will give a tour of the animal world. They give lots of fun facts why and how animals can be gay. I really hope I can go to this too!
– Collection United Love: Pride in Asia. With our love of Asia I think this is a worthwhile collection to see. 25 years ago was the first Asia Pride in Manila, a lot has happened since then. There will be various pictures showing the Pride community’s through all of Asia.
This is the first time that Pride will have a Women’s Day! It’s Wednesday 31st July @Femmazing will be hosting some great events on the day. They have organised it in the beautiful A’dam Tower. During the afternoon there is a Bachata workshop and in the evening the Glow in the Dark Pride Party! I will be going to the party, are you coming too?! Get your tickets HERE!
YES! the best party of Pride week will be on Saturday 3rd August: the Canal Parade. This day is known as the main Pride day of Amsterdam. People come from all over the world and the city is heaving. Many different organisations have boats that will be cruising through the Amsterdam Canals. It’s fun, glittery, colourful and just pure joy and happiness. I will be standing on the hospital OLVG boat. Last year was my first time and I have to say it’s was the best party I’ve ever experienced.
I will take you on the journey this week, so make sure you watch our stories at @_breakingthedistance. Check out the Pride Amsterdam website and Instagram @prideamsterdam and you can even download the app for timetables because there are so many more events and parties going on. Let us know what you’re up to and HAVE FUN!
