We have been in lockdown for over seven weeks and during this time, we have seen so many lesbian movies. As lesbians we of course love a good lesbian movie. When I (Marthe) was 24 I discovered that I was bisexual (read store here). Since then, I have binge watched all the lesbian movies and series you can imagine. A whole new world opened up to me, however, I also found out that there are many bad lesbian movies out there. We want to share our favourites with you, so you don’t have to search for the good ones any longer.
French Drama, 2013, IMDb rating: 7.7 Duration: 3hr
When I saw this French movie for the first time I was mesmerised by Emma (Lea Seydoux), the girl with the blue hair. The young girl Adèle (Adèle Exarchopoulos) falls in love with the tomboy Emma and a beautiful yet complicated love story unfolds. I have to say I loved the famous graphic sex scene but not everyone agrees with me. Some people say that there were no real lesbians on set whilst filming, that the sex is unrealistic and turns into porn. As a new and curious lesbian I watched that scene a few times and learned from it too. Looking back I can now see why people were so critical (read our blog post about lesbian sex here). It doesn’t represent typical lesbian sex. Despite this it’s still a beautiful love story with incredible acting!
Comedy, 1999, IMDb rating: 6.6 Duration: 1h 25m
You must see this classic movie. I saw it recently with Tash for the first time and it’s so good! The main character is Megan (Natasha Lyonne) a teenager who is sent off to a conversion camp for queer adolescents. Whilst they are trying to cure her, she makes some amazing friends and a lot of hilarious things happens. It’s a sweet, funny, campy and meaningful movie. Easy to watch and gives you a different perspective on coming out stories. It also stars RuPaul, which is the first reason you should watch it. Definitely a feel good movie!
Drama, 2017, IMDb rating: 6.6 Duration: 1h 54m
In the mood for a more serious movie? Then disobedience is the perfect one. Ronit (Rachel Weisz) returns to her Orthodox Jewish community to attend her father’s funeral. She reunites with her secret childhood love Esti (Rachel McAdams). Esti is in a strict Jewish marriage and very unhappy. The story unfolds and reveals a tender love story.
Comedy, 2005, IMDb rating: 6.8 Duration: 1h 30m
A British romantic comedy with a lot of endearing and charming moments. Rachel (Piper Perabo) is in a relationship with Heck (Matthew Goode) and they decide to get married. During the wedding Rachel sees the beautiful Luce (Lena Headey) and is confused. A funny, cute, romantic and touching story. Some say it is filled with cliches, but I have to say I didn’t see some plot twists coming. An easy movie to watch on a Sunday evening.
Drama, 2016, IMDb rating: 5.5 Duration: 1h 34m
Not the greatest lesbian movie of all time, however I still have to recommend it. Jasmine (Natalie Krill) is a feminine woman engaged to a man. She meets the boyish looking Dallas (Erika Linder) and a sexy love affair ensues. The story doesn’t have much depth and the main characters are not so likeable in the beginning. Nevertheless, the sex scenes are pretty intense. When they have sex it feels real and sincere. Some people say this is just a typical shallow lesbian story, but I can appreciate it! And why complain? Watching two hot woman having sex on screen with some form of a love story on top? Count me in!
Drama, 2015, IMDb rating: 7.2 Duration: 1h 58m
The movie is set in 1950’s, New York. Therese (Rooney Mara) is a young woman when she meets Carol (Cate Blanchett). They develop a secret love whilst Carol is divorcing her husband and having to deal with a young daughter. This movie is filmed beautifully. So much attention to detail, you can feel the chemistry between the two women. They both perform phenomenally and whilst the movie is quite slow, it doesn’t get boring. I saw this movie before I knew I was into women and it kept my interest all the way through. My mum fell asleep in the cinema watching, but that happens a lot, so that doesn’t mean anything 😉
Documentary, 2020, IMDb rating: 8.1 Duration: 1h 21m
This is a ‘must-see’ documentary about a secret lesbian love story. It is a real and touching story. We both cried so much! It makes you realise that life is short and love can last forever. The two women held their love in secret for almost seven decades and had other people believe they were just good friends. It is bittersweet, heartbreaking, real and loving. Feel like crying your eyes out? Then this is the one!
Romance, 2020, IMDb rating: 7.1 Duration: 1h 44m
This is a new movie on Netflix and yes it’s cute! The three main characters play their part really well. For me it was sometimes a little slow but still worth the watch. Ellie (Leah Lewis) plays the part of a young innocent geeky girl in high school. Paul (Daniel Diemer) is also a young guy and is in love with the popular Aster (Alexxis Lemire). Ellie is known for her good writing and Paul asks her to write a love letter for Aster. In the end Ellie and Paul become really good friends, but there is of course a lesbian love story involved. Can you guess who?
Drama, 2011, IMDb rating: 6.9 Duration: 1h 45m
This is a Swedish movie and is so good! Yes, maybe another cliche, but hey they exist for a reason. Mia (Ruth Vega Fernandez) is engaged to Tim (Joakim Natterqvist), but on a weekend get-away with his family. She falls for her soon to be stepmother’s lesbian daughter Frida. Are you still following? Well, maybe you should go and watch it yourself! You can empathise with every character in the movie, which makes this such a good film!
British romantic drama, 2008, IMDb rating: 6.5 Duration: 1h 22m
The young Jordanian Tala (Lisa Ray) lives in London and is soon to be (can you believe it?) married! Yes, another one like this, but apparently it’s a popular theme in the lesbian movies. This one is actually based on the true story of Shamin Sarifa’s life. Tala falls in love with the British Indian Leyla (Sheetal Sheth) and well, another lesbian love story unfolds.
